CMEC student Matthew Goldklang receives Microsoft’s AI for Earth-grant

Matthew Goldklang, master student at CMEC, receives Microsoft’s AI for Earth-grant. The grant has been given to examine effects of climate change on marine ecosystems. It includes access to data science and machine learning assets, and the mapping and spatial analysis software Esri ArcGIS Pro.

Matthew Goldklang, master student at Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate, has received Microsoft’s AI for Earth-grant worth $15,000. Matthew works on the planetary boundaries framework supervised by Professor Katherine Richardson.

The grant awards “advanced Microsoft Azure cloud computing resources to individuals working on environmental and conservation programs aimed towards transforming the way we currently manage complex environmental challenges”.

Matthew Goldklang, master student at CMEC, has received Microsoft’s AI for Earth-grant to examine the effects of climate change on marine ecosystem structure.

Matthew received the grant to examine the effects of climate change on marine ecosystem structure. In particular, trying to predict tipping points, understand ecosystem resilience, and portray global patterns in ecosystem response. Matthew explains,

All of this work is going towards understanding the biosphere integrity planetary boundary. The grant gives us all the computing power we need, plus the ideal machine-learning infrastructure to lend our model predictive power.

Grantees get access to Azure cloud computing resources, including data science and machine learning assets in the Azure Data Science Virtual Machine. They also get access to the mapping and spatial analysis software Esri ArcGIS Pro.
