New bird curator to succeed Jon Fjeldså

Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate has hired Pete Hosner to succeed Jon Fjeldså as bird curator at the National History Museum of Denmark. Pete comes from a position at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and has a lifelong interest in birds. We are looking very much forward to welcoming Pete and his wife.

Jon Fjeldså will soon hand over the responsibility of the bird collection at the National History Museum of Denmark. To succeed Jon, the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate has been very lucky to hire Pete Hosner, previously postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, United States. Pete is a true “birder” and holds a PhD from the University of Kansas on the drivers of avian diversification in an island archipelago.

Pete Hosner will succeed Jon Fjeldså as bird curator at the National History Museum of Denmark starting Wednesday 1 November 2018.

Pete’s interest in avian biology developed from his enjoyment of nature and birding as a child growing up in rural Michigan. In his research, he has investigated how geographical, environmental and ecological factors shift avian distributions over time and influence diversification. His field interests span the globe, but most of his experience is in the Americas and Asia, particularly the tropics. As a museum biologist, he focuses on multiple specimen preparation types and diverse metadata to increase the scope and usefulness of these materials in ecology and evolutionary biology.

We look forward to integrate Pete at CMEC, the Museum and in Denmark in general. He has moved to Denmark with his wife, Hannah Owens, who is a researcher in ecology and evolutionary biology.

So, please welcome both Pete and Hannah. Pete’s first day is today Wednesday 1 November 2018.
